Seattle State of the Youth Workshop

Fuller Institute for Theology and Northwest Culture and Quest Church will be hosting our first annual Seattle all-area youth one-day event. This one-day event invites pastors, youth leaders, school teachers, community leaders and culture-makers into a space for conversation and relationship as we explore how to love the youth of the Seattle area well.

This workshop will bring together regionally recognized theologians, community leaders, pastors, and youth psychologists to discuss the compelling and thoughtful work of what it means to care for the youth of Seattle. We will partner together with a community of leaders who believe in the transformative power of investing in a student’s life. It takes a village to raise a child, and we believe that the leaders, mentors, and educators of Seattle have been gifted with the privilege of caring for and raising up the youth in this city.

Some of the questions we plan to address include:

· What are some of the ways mentorship plays a role in a student’s life?

· What are some ways we can better care for students in the specific areas of mental health and homelessness?

· How can organizations partner together to care well for youth in Seattle?

· What are some current systems that keep students from excelling and how do we partner together to combat these systems?

Glenn McCray was born and raised in Seattle’s Rainier Beach Neighborhood to an immigrant Filipino mother from the Philippines and an African-American father from Louisiana. For more than 15 years, Glenn has been working with and learning from young people in a number of ways, including: leading enrichment programs with Seattle Schools, serving as Lead Chaplain with King County Youth Chaplaincy, and speaking more. Glenn works at Urban Impact as the Director of Church-based Community Development.

Kate is the Program Director at Street Youth Ministries (SYM). Believing that God brings hope in the midst of relationships, SYM works to provide young people experiencing homelessness with life-skills, resources and relationships that bring hope and healing to their lives and the community. Kate holds a MEd in School Counseling, and has been with SYM for 8 years.

Blake Raney is the Area Director for Young Life in NW Seattle. He and his wife, Chanda live in Ballard with their three kids. He has been with Young Life, an international organization that seeks to introduce adolescents to Jesus Christ and help them grow in their faith, for seven years. Blake believes that every young person should have the chance to consider the truth of who Jesus Christ is.

Phillip Lewis is a graduate of University of Washington. He serves as the Associate Student Director at Quest Church in Seattle. Phillip is always excited to drink coffee, read new books and meet new people. He is committed and passionate about seeing students in the Seattle area come to know Jesus in an intimate and compelling way through the art of teaching and story-telling.
